The Original American Clay

Har-Tru has been the standard for green clay courts in North America since 1950. Made from crushed metabasalt — a naturally occurring green stone — it delivers the authentic clay court experience without the maintenance demands of European red clay.

Built for Players, Not Just Looks

The surface absorbs impact, slows the game to reward strategy and skill, and allows the natural slide that clay court tennis demands. It plays like clay should — consistent, forgiving, and honest.

Trusted by Clubs Nationwide

From private clubs to USTA facilities, Har-Tru is the surface of choice for venues that take their courts seriously. CourtCraft is a certified Har-Tru installation partner with 25+ years of clay court experience.

The Benefits

What Makes Har-Tru Different.

Tennis player in motion — Har-Tru reduces joint impact by up to 50%

Joint Health

Up to 50% Less Impact on Joints

Har-Tru's crushed stone surface absorbs impact energy that asphalt and concrete transfer directly to knees, hips, and ankles. Studies show clay surfaces reduce peak ground reaction forces by up to 50% compared to asphalt — meaning longer playing careers and fewer overuse injuries.

  • Reduces peak ground reaction force vs. asphalt surfaces
  • Allows natural deceleration and slide — less abrupt stops
  • Preferred surface for players recovering from lower-body injuries
Har-Tru green clay court surface texture — stays cooler than asphalt in summer heat

Surface Temperature

Cooler Underfoot in Summer Heat

Asphalt and concrete absorb and radiate heat — on a hot summer day, an asphalt surface can reach 140°F. Har-Tru's porous green clay stays significantly cooler, making afternoon play comfortable even in peak summer conditions. The surface is also watered before play, which further reduces temperature and dust.

  • Up to 15°F cooler than asphalt in direct sun
  • Porous surface allows water absorption — no puddles
  • Pre-play watering cools and firms the surface simultaneously

Longevity

30+ Years With Proper Maintenance

A properly installed and maintained Har-Tru court will outlast most asphalt and acrylic surfaces. The clay can be replenished, the base remains intact, and the court can be resurfaced rather than replaced — making it a significantly better long-term investment for clubs and private owners.

  • Surface material can be replenished without full reconstruction
  • Base system designed for 30+ year service life
  • Lower lifetime cost than repeated asphalt resurfacing

About Har-Tru

Har-Tru is a brand of green clay tennis court surface made from crushed metabasalt — a naturally occurring green stone quarried in the eastern United States. It has been the standard for green clay courts in North America since 1950 and is the only American-made clay court surface approved by the USTA for sanctioned tournament play.

Red clay (used at Roland Garros) is made from crushed brick and is significantly slower and heavier than Har-Tru. Har-Tru's crushed metabasalt is lighter, drains faster, and requires less water to maintain. It plays faster than red clay but slower than asphalt — the sweet spot for most club and recreational players.

Har-Tru also dries faster after rain — typically playable within 30–60 minutes of a shower, compared to several hours for red clay.

Yes. Har-Tru is USTA approved for all levels of sanctioned tournament play, from local club events through to national championships. It is the only American green clay surface with this approval. CourtCraft installs to USTA specifications on every project.

Installation

A new Har-Tru court installation typically takes 3–5 weeks from groundbreaking to first play, depending on site conditions, drainage requirements, and weather. The base preparation is the most time-intensive phase — the clay surface itself is applied in the final days. We'll give you a detailed timeline in your quote.

In some cases, yes — but it depends on the existing base condition and drainage. A proper Har-Tru installation requires a specific base system with adequate drainage. We assess every existing court before recommending conversion vs. new construction.

If the existing base is sound and drainage can be added, conversion is often more cost-effective than a full rebuild. We'll tell you honestly which option makes sense for your site.

Har-Tru courts require a perimeter drainage system and a properly graded base that allows water to move off the surface quickly. The standard system uses a crushed stone base layer over a drainage membrane, with perforated pipe around the perimeter. CourtCraft designs the drainage system to your specific site conditions — soil type, slope, and local rainfall patterns all factor in.

Maintenance

Har-Tru courts require daily maintenance during the playing season — watering, brushing, and rolling. This takes approximately 20–30 minutes per court per day. The surface needs to be kept moist enough to bind but not so wet that it becomes soft.

Annual maintenance includes adding fresh Har-Tru material to replenish what's lost through play and weather, and checking the lines and net posts. CourtCraft provides a full maintenance guide with every installation.

Har-Tru is a forgiving surface — minor damage from drought, heavy rain, or heavy use can be repaired by adding fresh material and re-rolling. Unlike asphalt, which requires full resurfacing when cracked, Har-Tru damage is typically spot-repairable. CourtCraft offers maintenance service contracts for clubs that want professional upkeep.

Most courts need a fresh top-dressing of Har-Tru material every 1–3 years, depending on usage intensity and maintenance quality. A heavily-used club court may need annual replenishment; a private court with moderate use might go 3 years between top-dressings. We'll assess your court and recommend a schedule based on actual wear.
